As 2013 has come to a close we have begun 2014 with a few bright spots. Milk prices seem to be holding a positive trend while corn has become affordable. It seems that 2014 might hold some positive economic results for our industry.
On the federal level, the Farm Bill is being promised sometime soon and from the outside some progress seems to be happening. As usual, the specific details concerning the Dairy Security Act or dairy policy in general in the Farm Bill probably will not fully surface until the bill is almost done. As for immigration reform, based on what I have read, that policy seems to be going nowhere anytime soon.
More importantly, we are only a few weeks away from our state legislative session. As I wrote in the last Udder Report, the Right to Farm Act is our main focus for this short session.
Please help us by contacting your representatives both locally and on the state level to gain support for agriculture across the state. If you need any information to provide to your representatives, please contact the office and they will be more than happy to provide you with whatever you need. If you would like to help during the legislative session, Beverly will be up in Santa Fe for the whole session with Kaye being there for the majority of it as well. Please let them know if you will be around so that you might be able to talk to a few legislators while you are there.
Thanks for your help.
